From the Coffee House to the Page: A New Chapter in (and out of) the Studio

Welcome—or welcome back—to this space. I’ll start with a note of gratitude (and perhaps a little humility) for the quiet stretch between blog posts. Life has been full in all the ways that matter, and in the midst of it, I’ve been deeply thankful for a renewed sense of connection—an ever-growing community of people engaging with and encouraging my work. Much of this recent chapter has been shaped by a project especially close to my heart: Theo of Golden, a novel by the wonderfully gifted author—and my longtime friend—Allen Levi. For those unfamiliar with the story behind it, the world Allen created draws inspiration from my permanent exhibit, Faces of the Fountain City, housed in a local coffee shop here in Columbus, Georgia. If you’ve spent time in our city, you may recognize its spirit woven throughout the pages of Theo—a reflection of place, people, and shared stories.
It has been a true joy to see visual art take on new life in the written word. I often say, somewhat jokingly, that I’m just happily riding along on Allen’s coattails—but in truth, this intersection of our creative paths has been incredibly meaningful. Seeing how it has resonated with readers and art lovers alike is something I don’t take for granted. As Vincent van Gogh once wrote, “I feel that there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people,” and I think that spirit of connection is at the heart of it all.
That same sense of inspiration has been flowing steadily into the studio. Alongside a full slate of portrait commissions, I’ve found myself drawn to quieter work—landscapes and still-life pieces that reflect the beauty of everyday moments. There’s something deeply satisfying about slowing down, studying the light, and trying to capture the small, often overlooked details that make the world feel meaningful and alive.
At the same time, my love for portraiture continues to guide so much of what I do. I’ve been honored to receive ongoing requests for head studies, sketches and commissioned oil portraits, including those of Episcopal spiritual leaders. Painting individuals who dedicate their lives to faith, service, and community is a privilege I hold with great care—each piece an opportunity to honor not just a likeness, but a life and its story.
Whether you’ve been following along for many years or have just found your way here through Theo, thank you. Truly. Your support, encouragement, and interest mean more than I can easily put into words—and they’re what keep the brushes moving.
I look forward to sharing more soon, including new pieces coming off the easel.
